A Word for Monday – 23 September, 2013

For today’s “Word,” let’s look at a couple of common phrases you would use if you were to ever visit Slovakia (hint, hint):

English Slovak

My name is…

Volám sa…

[VO-lahm sah ___]

It’s good to meet you.

Teší ma.

[TYESH-ee mah]

This is constructed differently than we’re used to in English.  Rather than saying, “My name is,” in Slovak are saying literally “I am called.”  And “teší ma” literally means “it pleases me.”
