Here are three thought-provoking articles when you have time to read them. Two deal directly with the Roma, and one deals with poverty and human trafficking.
First is a general article that addresses a lot of the interest in Roma piqued by the recent discovery of a 4-year-old white girl in a Roma settlement in Greece (see story here). Authorities assumed she had been stolen, the Roma family claims she was adopted. Of course, this story has rekindled all kinds of familiar stereotypes, especially about Roma being “child stealers.” This CNN Article is a good historical overview of the Roma people and their situation in the world today.
This surprisingly-balanced article about Roma in Slovakia was posted recently on the Al Jazeera news website.
Article: Slovakia’s Forgotten Roma
I must admit that this article jolted me in several different ways… it makes me think about things differently I see every day here in Kosice. Thanks to Matt & Michelle Norman for pointing to this in their own recent post.
