A Word for Monday – 21 April 2014

Today’s word is the Slovak word for Easter:

Veľká noc

[velkah notes]

It literally means “Big Night,” and refers to the night of Saturday/Sunday, during which Jesus rose from the dead… and during which many Slovak and Roma families celebrate together.  It is traditional to fast much of the day Saturday, until the first star appears.  That’s when the eating and the celebrating can begin!

A picture and an article to accompany this week’s word:

One tradition particular to eastern Slovakia is the Blessing of the Food. People bring an Easter basket filled with traditional foods to be blessed by a priest at the church. Then entire community turns out in some places! Afterwards, you share the food with family and friends, and it must ALL be eaten!

Also, see this article about interesting traditions for Easter Monday.  In Slovakia and other Eastern European countries, the celebrating goes on past Sunday.  Here, they still keep a very old tradition of “watering” the girls.  Read the following article — yes, they still do this here!  Click here to go to the article (in a new window), or click the picture below.
