I saw Jesus this weekend in a small village outside Kosice. We’d visited other places in the village before, but this weekend we’d been asked to stay overnight and meet some of the people in a Slovak Evangelical church that reaches out to Roma in the community.
Jesus was quite clearly visible as we spent time with the Slovak husband-wife pastors of this church. It wasn’t just in what these pastors said – after all, we pastors tend to talk about Jesus a lot. But this time, I saw Jesus not in how they talked but in how they lived.
Like Jesus they come among their “sheep” (both Roma and Slovaks) and offer words of hope in the midst of struggles. Like Jesus they sometimes confront these believers with both conviction and forgiveness. Like Jesus they laugh and cry with these people through the course of life’s events. Like Jesus they offer healing and help, and they speak out against prejudice and oppression in their community.
When have you seen someone recently who’s living like Jesus lived?
